Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has prepared about 10 courses in
various faculties for accreditation by the National University Commission
(NUC) in 2014, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Sunday W.
Peters, has said.
Peters said the university will be ready to present the courses including
Geoscience, Marine Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics/Statistics, Computer
Science, Agricultural Engineering, Civil and Mechanical Engineering among
others for accreditation this year even as work continues on other courses.
“We are hopeful that the various constructions and remodeling of some
facilities will be completed before the students are back to campus,” Peters
said. The projects which are in different levels of completion are said to be
built according to the NUC Standards and specifications. Works on the
faculties in the main campus at Mkpat Enin are all ongoing, while
renovation of old and construction of new dormitories in Obio Akpa
Campus is in execution.
Chairman of the AKSU Governing Council, Prof Okon Eminue, said he was
satisfied with the pace of work while urging the resource persons to
expedite action on the construction works.
They both spoke when the Commissioner of Education, Prof. Mrs Atim
Antai led an inspection team, comprising of the Special Assistant to the
Governor on student Matters, Comrade Ini Ememobong, staff of the
ministry and members of special task force to assess the quality and level
of execution of projects at the main campus.
Antai noted that there were so many additional construction works on site
different from the original plans which the contracts were awarded.
According to her, though there are allowable variations in government
contracts, that such permissible variations should not exceed reasonable
percentages. She advised the resource persons to always obtain approval
for price adjustment before embarking on project extension.
Ememobong on the other hand said most of the variations were caused by
changes in plans. He advised the school architects to always liaise with
the faculties Officers and Heads of Departments before forwarding their
final drawings and plans to the contract awarding committee.
In his response, the spokesman for the school architectural team said,
some of the adjustments were necessary so as to meet the NUC regulatory
standards.
